Episode 128: Chillin' in the Wadi
Written by Esteban Salazar
Sunday, 22 July 2012 12:29

Hear that shitty, dreary music from Gustaberg? Me neither, but we're joined this week by Technology Ethics expert Liedra, our first female guest on the show! We discuss the ethics involved in robotics, tech, and video games, how it feels to be an empowered gal and get hit on in MMOs and various other things. Esteban finds he's turned on by the kink, Dale admits his long-hidden fetish and we find out whether Facebook is truly evil or not. Among all this, games are discussed (including one we promised we wouldn't talk about anymore) and lots of laughs are had. Remember: do NOT try to fuck a girl's accent.

What an awesome surprise it was to hear Linliel on this week's podcast! She did a great job.

Lin, if you are out there reading this, I'm curious to hear what you know about the video game censorship practices of the Australian government. I wonder why they took such a hard stance against video games and I wonder how you feel about it as an Australian Ethicist. What little I have heard really sounds shockingly old fashioned from an American's viewpoint.

Elmdor. Kiss your backlog management goals goodbye. It seemed like everytime I looked at a game during the Steam Sale, you always showed up on my list of friends who already owned it!! By the way, are you still on the 1 out 1 in plan?

lol, I do own way too many games on Steam, indeed. And yeah, 1 in, one out. I went negative due to the Steam sale! I got plans, though. Big plans.

I really like Elmdor's "Uninstall" segment. It would be cool if you could uninstall one game per week, giving reasons why of course ;-).

Btw, I notice the X series is the Steam mid-week madness sale. Assuming I don't want to buy the entire X pack, where is the best place to start? I'm considering buying:
X3 Terran War Pack
Includes 2 items: X3: Terran Conflict, X3: Albion Prelude

Really liked the Walking Dead. Playing that game is as enjoyable as the comic or the TV show, and that's saying something. Interesting that I seem to really like the TV show compared to most people. The first 6 episodes felt rough but since that point it's hit its stride and really captured the feel of the comic. I think some people are getting hung up on story differences between the TV show and the comic (eg. Shane's character), but I wouldn't want them to be exactly the same. Any thoughts? Can't wait till episode 3!

I really like the game as well, mostly because it feels closer to the comic than the show. I like the show because of it's differences. The new redneck dude (Daryl?) and keeping Shane alive were the only reasons I kept watching. Rick is good, but they keep trying to build drama without any actually existing. I don't care about most of these characters so when they get eaten by zombies, who gives a fuck? Knowing what we know about the comic, are we supposed to not care about anyone but Rick? If that's the plan, it makes for shitty television. If Michonne and the Governor don't work then I think I'm done with it. I'll just play the TT game and enjoy that.

That is interesting Mr. GT Chris. My wife and I actually felt that the first few episodes of the WD TV series were some of the best. They had a a lot of tension.

Hey Greg! Nice to see you too, thanks! This was the first podcast I've ever done. As for your question - I can talk about that next week since I'll be re-appearing with Elmdor!

Hope you're doing well and stuff :D

Oh, I just saw GT Chris's post - yeah, X3 Terran Conflict is what I have and it's good times. I haven't played any other X3 games.

Terran Conflict/Albion Prelude is the way to go. The other ones are just prior versions. I don't think there is any reason whatsoever to play anything earlier.

Thanks Liedra and Elmdor. Terran Conflict/Albion Prelude get!

Also was fun to hear a fellow Australian on the podcast, even if I didn't recognise your accent right away! Been away from Aus too long!

wow why are like 2/3 of the podcast team speaking german oO. I always thought that the german language sounds to the rest of the world like an boring barking jiberish.

@liedra I would like to know about what you think about the dominance of the fps´s in the game industry from the an ethical point of view, isn´t it a bit disutrbing that most of the gamers love playing virtual war (i am no exception)?

don´t you think that at some point all this violence somehow desensitize people (exampel the image of a detonating bomb on the news is not as shocking at it should be, because you have see it like a million time in a modernwarfare game)?

is it form the ethical point of view ok that a hole generation is like militarized by the shooters and knows all the names of the common military weapons?

sorry for the bad grammar
